.COM vs .IN: The Ultimate Debate Settled (And When You Should Walk Away)
One of the most frequent questions we get at Domainwala is: "I’m an Indian business targeting Indian customers. Should I buy the .IN or chase the expensive .COM?"
For years, the .in extension has been a fantastic asset. It shows national pride, it signals immediate local relevance to Google, and it is cost-effective.
However, there is a dangerous trap that many new business owners fall into.
The "Leaky Bucket" Scenario
Let's say you want to launch a fashion brand called "Velvet Aura."
You check the availability. VelvetAura.com is taken by a massive clothing retailer in the US. But VelvetAura.in is available! You buy it, feeling lucky.
This is a mistake.
Why? Because of consumer muscle memory. For over 30 years, .com has been the default setting for the internet. When you tell a customer, "Go to Velvet Aura," a significant percentage of them will instinctively type .com into their browser.
If that .com leads to an active, thriving competitor, you are essentially paying to market their business. You hand out business cards, run ads, and tell friends about your site—and 20% of that traffic leaks to the US retailer.
When is .IN Okay?
Using a .in domain is perfectly fine, provided you pass the Competitor Check:
- The .COM is inactive: If you type in the
.comversion and it leads to a "Page Not Found" or a generic "For Sale" landing page, you are generally safe. There is no active brand confusion. - The .COM is a totally different industry: If you sell shoes on
.in, and the.comis a blog about cloud computing, the confusion is minimal.
The Ultimate Fix
If the .com is taken by a direct competitor, do not settle for the .in. Change your name.
It is better to own GetVelvet.com or VelvetStore.in (where the corresponding .com is empty) than to fight a losing battle against an established giant.
Domainwala Verdict
If you can get the .com, get it. It is the gold standard. If you are targeting India specifically, .in is a wonderful choice—but only if the .com version isn't going to steal your customers. Do your homework before you pay the registration fee.
